Can a greener club
keep winning?

A football club made sustainability its identity, climbed two divisions, then fell back. The harder question is what the whole journey teaches us.

Exhibit 01 / The sporting record

The climb. The fall. The rebuild.

Higher on the chart means a higher division. Each point is the league played in that season.

Sustainability can coexist with success.
It cannot guarantee it.

FGR challenges the claim that environmental ambition necessarily prevents sporting progress. It does not establish that sustainability caused the promotions—or that it caused the relegations.

Under Dale Vince, the club rose from the fifth tier to the third. It then finished last in consecutive divisions and returned to the fifth. The environmental identity spans both outcomes. [2]

The strongest management lesson is about durability: a distinctive purpose can shape a club’s operations and appeal, but retaining talent, replacing leaders and managing a higher competitive level remain essential.

01

Compatibility is demonstrated

A vegan club won promotion. Environmental ambition and sporting achievement were possible together.

02

Causation is unresolved

Ownership, funding, recruitment and coaching changed too. There is no clean comparison isolating the environmental program.

03

Resilience is the test

A successful system must survive staff departures and poor seasons. A strong mission needs repeatable football management.

“the alignment of conditions for competition and conservation”
Read the original essay

The original essay called this idea Competitive Sustainability. FGR were leading League Two, making the argument compelling: environmental commitments did not appear to be holding the team back.

The subsequent seasons make it a more demanding case. If wins are credited to sustainability, consistency requires asking what defeats mean. The answer needs more than the league table.

The Icarus analogy captures the emotional arc. As a business explanation, it risks making collapse seem inevitable. Promotion changes opponents; departures change capabilities; appointment decisions change execution. Those mechanisms can be investigated.

One owner.
Several changes
at once.

Founded in 1889, Forest Green had reached the Conference in 1998. Vince entered in August 2010 during financial difficulty. The stadium itself predates him: the New Lawn opened in 2006. [2]

Just before his arrival, a 21st-place finish had left the club exposed to relegation. A league reprieve kept FGR in the fifth tier. The starting point was survival, not a stable platform for effortless growth. [18]

Vince’s involvement combined an environmental mission with a change in ownership and resources. Comparing “before” with “after” therefore evaluates that entire package. It cannot tell us how an equally funded FGR without the sustainability program would have performed.

Food

A vegan matchday

Fully vegan club operations from 2015, covering food for players and fans. This is a club policy, not proof of everyone’s private diet. [2]

Energy

Generation + procurement

FGR reports solar providing around 20% of annual electricity needs, with additional renewable electricity supplied by Ecotricity. Gas is a separate mix. [4]

Water + grounds

Retrofit the everyday

Rainwater capture and reuse for irrigation, an organic pitch and grounds managed without chemical pesticides are part of the operating model. [4]

Carbon

Measure, reduce, offset

FGR joined the UN’s Climate Neutral Now initiative in 2018. The pledge included offsetting; carbon neutrality does not mean no emissions were produced. [5]

Why this case does not chart an annual carbon score

The 2021 essay cited a small pandemic-era footprint and compared it with a US household. That is not a like-for-like baseline for a football business. COVID restricted attendance and travel, and organizational boundaries may differ.

The reviewed club page reports carbon totals using “last season” without a sufficiently clear year for a current comparison. A credible time series would need consistent reporting boundaries, gross emissions before offsets, attendance, fixtures and travel coverage. A higher attendance denominator can reduce emissions per spectator while total emissions rise.

This case therefore shows adoption milestones. The continuing color means a milestone has been reached; it does not certify current compliance or steadily improving environmental performance. Eco Park is not counted as a completed stadium saving.

Promotion brought
a harder test.
Key people left.

Winning promotion did not keep the winning organization together.

In 2022, FGR lost its head coach, his assistant, important players and, later, its director of football. The losses extended beyond the pitch into coaching and recruitment. This was an organizational “brain drain”.

Watford were preparing for the Championship. Bristol City and Cardiff were also Championship clubs; Barnsley and Portsmouth were League One clubs. The pressure came from across the football hierarchy.

Interpretation

The strategic risk is losing several complementary capabilities together. Keeping a manager is different from retaining a recruitment system; transfer compensation is different from replacing a player’s contribution. The evidence supports a disruption hypothesis, not a measured estimate of how many points those departures cost.

Hannah Dingley and Dan Connor also held interim roles in the 2023/24 cycle; they are excluded from the five permanent appointments. [9] [11] [12]

There were other pressures: tougher opposition, recruitment and tactical changes, plus injury. Matty Stevens was already recovering from an ACL injury by May 2022. No single-factor explanation can be isolated from the sources reviewed. [13]

Back in contention.
Still outside the EFL.

FGR finished third in 2024/25, losing to Southend in the play-offs. In 2025/26, seventh place led to another play-off attempt and defeat at Boreham Wood. The club remains in the National League for 2026/27. [3] [14] [15]

The latest change: Peterborough appointed Robbie Savage on 2 October 2026. FGR’s prior statement said he had asked to leave for personal reasons. That context matters: another departure is not, by itself, proof of the same mechanism as 2022. [16] [17]

The mission has outlasted a league cycle. Whether it helps the next recovery remains an open empirical question.

Three different scoreboards.

Sporting success, environmental performance and financial durability answer different questions.

Observed

Sporting achievement

Two promotions under Vince, followed by two relegations. Compatibility with sustainability is visible; an incremental effect on results is not identified.

Documented practices

Environmental change

Specific operating changes and a climate pledge are documented. Comparable annual gross emissions and the impact of each intervention are not established here.

Not established

Financial durability

This review has no reconciled time series of club cash flow, owner support, football wages or incremental sponsorship margin. It cannot claim a self-financing model or positive sustainability ROI.

What would make the causal argument stronger?

Build a club-season panel with a comparable group of lower-league clubs selected using pre-2010 characteristics: division, attendance, wage resources, ownership changes and prior results. Examine pre-existing trends before estimating an effect.

Measure sporting performance relative to resources, alongside player availability, manager tenure and squad turnover. Separate owner financing from trading revenue and recurring sponsorship margin. Distinguish mission-related sponsorship from growth attributable to promotion.

Even a matched comparison would estimate the effect of the combined Vince-era strategy unless the sustainability intervention can be separated. Test specific changes—food, energy, transport—using their own costs, operational outcomes and suitable comparisons. A chart of two rising lines is not a causal design.

Build a program
that survives
a losing season.

The transferable idea is an operating discipline: improve environmental outcomes while protecting the capabilities that make the team competitive.

MLS and MLB do not share the English promotion-and-relegation mechanism. The useful transfer is at the level of venue operations, fan experience, commercial partnerships and organizational continuity—not a promise to reproduce FGR’s league climb.

01

Start with a bounded operating decision

Pilot a food offer, an energy retrofit or a travel intervention. Set a baseline and a comparison period before launch. Give the venue operator and relevant sporting staff a defined role.

Measure together

Gross emissions, cash cost, service quality and fan satisfaction.

02

Prove the commercial contribution

A distinctive environmental identity may attract partners. Count contracted incremental margin and renewals; publicity alone does not pay the wage bill.

Ask the counterfactual

Would this partner or fan revenue have arrived anyway?

03

Prepare for success to attract departures

Maintain succession candidates, shared recruitment knowledge and contract visibility. Replacing several key people at once should be a scenario in the plan.

Watch the exposure

Contract expiries, retained playing minutes and time to replace key roles.

04

Keep the measurement honest when results turn

Report sporting, commercial and environmental outcomes separately. Scale projects that deliver; revise those that miss their operational goals. Avoid crediting every win or blaming every loss on the mission.

Decision rule

Pre-agree cost, experience and performance guardrails.

The discussion question

If the team lost its coach and missed the playoffs, which parts of its sustainability strategy would still create value?

That is a tougher—and more useful—test than asking whether green teams win.

How to read the timeline

The x-axis uses the season’s starting year: 2022 means 2022/23. The y-axis is the division actually contested, with a lower tier number higher up. League One is tier 3; League Two is tier 4; the Conference/National League is tier 5. Tiers 1 and 2 are outside FGR’s observed range.

The default starts in 2007 to preserve a pre-Vince baseline on phones. “Since 2000” expands the same annual series. The club’s earlier history provides context, without implying today’s league structure existed in 1889.

What the colors mean

Gray: before Vince. Muted green: from his 2010 arrival. Bright green: from the club’s 2015 vegan transition. Lime: from the 2018 climate pledge. These are cumulative historical stages, not numeric scores, proof of uninterrupted certification or estimates of emissions avoided.

Season finishes are historical records. Interpretations and the executive playbook are analytical judgments. The current season is explicitly unfinished. Evidence checked on 7 October 2026.
